Finding Connection Through Care
Not every patient begins their journey with an appointment.
When an elderly man walked into a Camarena Health clinic looking for help, he wasn’t a patient. He was living with diabetes, facing communication challenges, and navigating life with limited support. Like many individuals experiencing hardship, he simply needed someone willing to listen.
As staff spent time getting to know him, they learned that one of his biggest barriers was staying connected. Without reliable communication, it was difficult to access services, receive reminders, or stay engaged with his healthcare.
The team stepped in to help him obtain a government-issued cell phone. The following day, he returned with a smile on his face, eager to show everyone that he had received it. Team members gathered around, programmed important phone numbers, and patiently walked him through how to use the device so he could stay connected moving forward.
Over time, trust began to grow. He eventually became a Camarena Health patient, allowing providers to better understand his health needs and connect him with ongoing care. During one of his visits, the care team identified a serious foot infection early, helping prevent what could have become a much more severe medical issue.
But perhaps the greatest impact wasn’t medical.
For the first time in a long time, he had a team of people checking on him, encouraging him, and helping him navigate life’s challenges. He gained more than healthcare—he gained connection, support, and a sense of community.
His story is a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful care begins long before treatment. It begins with noticing someone in need and choosing to help.
